Turkish teacher opens reading salon in Changzhou

A book-reading salon, periodically held at a café in Tianning district of Changzhou city in Jiangsu province, is sponsored by a Turkish man named Ali, a foreign teacher in Changzhou.

The 39-year-old has dedicated the past 17 years to teaching, and prior to moving to China, taught in Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam. Ali has worked in Changzhou the past four years, and now works at the Changzhou Senior High School as a teacher of physics and chemistry.

Since receiving his first job, Ali has had a vast amount of opportunities to read literature in a range of different countries. He said his favorite pieces to read are the works of Chinese litterateurs including Zhang Ailing, Lu Xun, Mao Dun and Laoshe. Since moving Changzhou, Ali has involved himself in dense reading atmosphere there and, by doing so, has since written two Changzhou-related novels.

Moreover, Ali has begun to regularly hold reading sessions at the salon of his favorite café in Changzhou. He started at beginning of the second half of last year. Ali said he enjoys the sessions as he meets a wide range of people, most of whom are local people and some foreigners.
