Feng Jianqing was born in Shanghai in 1939. He graduated  from Nanjing Arts University in 1961, majoring in oil painting, and then started his teaching career. He was appointed headmaster of the University from 1990 to 2008.

Feng studied oil painting in the first place, then lacquer painting, and wall painting. Started with the imitation of Soviet oil painting, which was popularized between 1940s and 1950s, Feng explored various fields, such as ink and color painting, lacquer painting, and large-scale oil painting. He is good at integrating Soviet oil painting skills with Chinese current events, which forms his own unique painting style. In his paintings, viewers can clearly see a timeline. Some of them praise Chinese socialist construction achievements. Some of them reflect heroes of the times.

He explains why he does this. "Life is the inspiration of arts. Living under current digital media age, we cannot experience life simply by following the rules and patterns of paintings in the old times. The interpretation of different messages in different contexts is a new method." As an artist, Feng injects his persistent consecration and passion toward life, and makes the best of his high-level thinking ability into drawing.
