Chen Lianhua, director of the Nephrology Department at the First People’s Hospital of Huai’an City, is head of the 12th Chinese medical team to Guyana.

She departed for Guyana with her team members from Huai’an in Jiangsu province on June 12, 2016 for a 12 month medical assistance mission.

During last year's Mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Sept 15, medical team members offered free medical services to the elderly at a nursing home in Guyana and brought Chinese moon cakes for them.

Later that autumn, on Oct 29, Chen and other members of the Chinese medical team drove to a mining area in the depths of a tropical rain forest to provide medical assistance to miners. Miners working in the tropical rain forest are prone to skin diseases, not to mention catching colds and suffering from gastrointestinal diseases, malaria and physical injuries. In addition, poisonous snakes and insects in the forest also pose threats to these miners. The Chinese medical team gave these miners some commonly used medicines free of charge, so that they didn’t have to make their usual four-to-five hour trip to the nearest medical facility to seek treatment for common diseases.

Besides offering medical services and providing medication and health information to locals, the Chinese medical team has also explored cultivating local medical personnel in innovative and practical ways, such as in clinical training, themed lectures and academic exchanges.

The Chinese doctors’ excellent medical skills and high-quality medical services have won praise from the people of Guyana, who hail them as “Chinese angels”.
