Suzhou opens Laba Folk Culture Festival

The Laba Folk Culture Festival, hosted by Huqiu Subdistrict Administration, opened in Shantang Street in Suzhou City on January 3. Free Laba porridge was also offered in the festival, attracting many residents and tourists.

Originally a Buddhist festival, Laba falls on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month. Major customs include ancestor worship, eating Laba rice porridge and making Laba garlic.

The festival in Suzhou also included shows, praying and other activities that reflect Chinese tradition and folk culture. It is themed on three key messages – gratitude, charity and health.
