The first drama festival in Nanjing’s Xianlin University Town raised the curtain at the Xianlin campus of Nanjing Foreign Language School.

The Choir from King's College, Cambridge presented 15 classical songs, including two performed in Mandarin Chinese: “Second Farewell to Cambridge”, originally a poem written by Chinese poet and King's College alumni Xu Zhimo, and “Jasmine Flower”, a Chinese folk song.

A noted early 20th-century Chinese poet, Xu Zhimo wrote his hugely popular poem in 1928. In 2008, the choir included the poem in songs in Chinese for the first time in its 500-year history. Now 10 years later, it performed them for audiences in Nanjing.

The festival, brainchild of the Xianlin University Town Administration Committee, aims to enable more people understand the area through drama performances that will also be held once a month from October to December.
