Xu Xia, 43, is known as the “celebrity of arts and crafts in Jiangsu province” for her award-winning artworks of random stitch embroidery.

Born in Yangzhou city, Xu was a clerk at Nanjing Information Industry Association when she saw the random stitch embroidery artworks from a TV program in 1998, which captured her interest immediately.

Also impressed by the love story of Yang Shouyu, originator of random stitch embroidery, she had a determination to make the best of herself by going in for the embroidery.

“My parents want me to work at the office, but I prefer a more creative job,” Xu looked back on the day when she resigned.

Random stitch embroidery is a kind of art form that originated from Changzhou, Jiangsu province in the 1930s.

Unlike other kinds of embroidery, it uses random stitches which run in different directions on several layers, thus making a colorful and deep-textured artwork that boasts the characteristics of oil painting and traditional embroidery.

In 2008, Xu Xia founded the first embroidery studio in Nanjing. Having been engaged in the creative art for nearly 20 years, Xu is still very modest and grateful when talking about her achievement. “A qualified random stitch embroiderer must be skilled at sketching and oil painting. I’m very lucky to have several good teachers in my career.”
