Sheng Jinyin, a fisherman at Heping Street of Zhenjiang, accidentally found a stranded young finless porpoise while he was organizing fishing nets on July 18. He immediately saved the calf and also contacted local fishery authority. Sheng later received an award of 1,000 yuan ($150) for saving the animal.

This finless porpoise is 73 cm long and it weighs about 4 kilograms. It is estimated to be less than two years old. At that time, the young finless porpoise had no injuries and it was in very good mental state. Expert estimated that due to unforeseen circumstances, the finless porpoise separated from his motherand then swam to shallow waters.

An official from Zhenjiang’s fishery supervision department said that the young finless porpoise is unable to survive alone, so it was released in waters near where it was found.
