Xiemaqiao village is built along the riverbanks in the suburban town of Qiandeng in Kunshan city, Jiangsu province.

Between the white walls and black tiled roofs of the Suzhou-style buildings, villagers hang out their laundry to dry and chat to neighbors on their doorsteps. Time seems to pass slower in Xiamaqiao, as the warmth of a simple life diffuses the air.

Numerous stone bridges connect the village together. Across from Dingsheng Bridge is an area of newly constructed residences. While, Zhongshan Bridge looks over lines of old houses, where painted walls have faded and bricks have fallen off.

At one building, hidden in a winding lane, hangs a marked wooden plaque. It is the memorial hall for the New Fourth Army forces that fought in the area against Japanese intruders. Exhibitions inside the memorial hall let visitors know that the peaceful life was hard-fought and that we should all cherish it and respect the brave soldiers who fought the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
