The preparatory work of the application of Qinhuai Lantern Fair to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists started recently. It is expected that the official application be made within two years.

The historic and grand Qinhuai Lantern Fair is a unique view of the city of Nanjing during New Year. In 2006, Qinhuai Lantern Fair was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in China. It is the most influential and representative one among Chinese lantern festivals.

Nanjing’s Qinhuai District will establish application institutions, advisory team and prepare relevant application materials in accordance with the requirements.

Experts suggest that the Qinhuai Lantern Fair should be promoted as a tourism project across China. At the same time, the Qinhuai Lantern Fair should go abroad and be given full play to its role as Nanjing and China’s "culture card" so that it can have an impact in a wider space.
