The “Focus on the New Normal of Chinese Economic Development” delegation, comprising 12 diplomats from 7 countries and 15 experts from 12 countries, started a three-day experience of “medicine and health tour” in Taizhou from Jan 8.

Taihetang Traditional Chinese Medicine Shop in “99 and a half rooms” residence at Daohe Block, Taizhou is a novelty to them. Acupuncture and moxibustion, manipulation, small needle-knife, rare medicinal herbs, such as penis cervi, cistanche and antelope horn, and valuable cultural relics, such as TCM mortar of the Qing Dynasty, personal letters of famous doctors and account books of pharmacy, surprised the experts.

As the fourth generation of successor of small needle-knife skill, Xia Jin, a 34-year-old doctor, was talking with the patient while performing an operation.

“Did the small needle-knife skill incorporate any Western medicine element,” asked Ms Sudshner from India. “Chinese and Western medicine are interlinked. For example, the small needle-knife skill employs anaesthesia and anatomy from Western medicine,” said Xia.

Chief physician Yang Bo was doing a manipulation for a child with congenital wry neck in the manipulation room. “The operation will cost more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,520), while half-hour manipulation costs only 50-60 yuan (US$7.6-9.12). Daily manipulation will cure the neck problem within several months,” said the child’s mother.
