Surging Waves Pavilion(沧浪亭)was built in the 11th century. Its gate faces a pond,and the buildings inside the garden are all constructed around hills. Ascending the Viewing Hill Tower,gives you a good view of the distant hills to the southwest of the city. Located in downtown Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Pingjiang Street is a historical road along the river, where the city's history and unique feature have been well-preserved. As early as in Song Dynasty, the street had already existed, which was shown on Suzhou's earliest map "Pingjiang Map" as one of the main streets of the town during that time. With the total length of 1,606 meters, the street parallels with Pingjiang River. The typical houses of ancient Suzhou with white walls and black tiles are standing by the street and river, simple and unsophisticated. Canglangting Pavilion(Canglangting Garden)is one of the four most famous gardens in Suzhou and has been listed as a 4-AAAA national tourist attraction and a site on the World Heritage list. The garden was initially erected in 1044 in the Song Dynasty as a private residence and was enlarged as a garden in later years and named as the Pavilion of the Azure Waves. Owing to Buddhist influence,the garden offers some features of special interest that distinguish it from other gardens in Suzhou. On June 1982,the street was designated by the municipal authority as a□□walking street□□and a new night market was established. Lying in the downtown core of Suzhou,the main theme of the street involves eating,shopping and entertaining. A Taoism temple,the Xuanmiao Temple,is situated on Guanqian with its front entrance facing the street and providing the thriving and noisy street with solemnity and calm. Concrete piles have been driven into the ground around the pagoda in order to reinforce the foundation. Sword Testing Stone and Sword Pond is another landmark of the historic site. Lying in the Town of Fengqiao(Maple Bridge Township),Hanshan Temple(Han Shan Temple,Cold Mountain Temple)was initially erected in Liang Dynasty(502-557).Two famed Buddhist monks,Han Shan and Shi De,once lived in the temple and as a result the name was given later in memory of Monk Han Shan. The temple gained more fame after a poem,A Night Mooring near Maple Bridge,from Zhang Ji,a poet from the Tang Dynasty,became popular. The poem described the vivid scene in which the midnight bell rings in Han Shan Temple while the boat guests approach the shore. Shizilin Garden(Lion Grove Garden)is honored as one of the four most famous gardens in Suzhou and has been listed as a site of the World Famous Cultural Heritage. The Lion Grove Garden is best known for its rockeries and is thus given the title-the Rockery Kingdom. The rocks are mostly made of limestone taken from Lake Taihu and are piled into diverse forms resembling lions and other animals. Since the Qing Dynasty,many famous people have visited the garden including Emperor Qianlong and left a lot of historic relics. [Detail]
