Kunqu(also called Kunju Opera)has a history of 400 years and is called the Mother of Chinese Opera. It was named by UNESCO on May 18th of the year 2001 as a"representative work of human being's oral and non-substantial heritage". Ballad Singing is an art of talking and singing in Suzhou dialect,and has spread as a popular form of entertainment across Jiangsu,Zhejiang,and Shanghai for over 300 years. A Suzhou-style brick-carving mural artwork, the largest of its kind in China, which was created by Liu Yiming, the inheritor of Suzhou-style brick-carving intangible cultural heritage, based on a painting named Painting of Famous Sceneries in Nanjing painted by Liu Nanping, a noted painter in Yangzhou, was completed at Nanjing Dongjiao State Guest House on the morning of Apr 5. Two performers performing Suzhou Pingtan[Photo:fqsz. Pinghua was developed from a speaking art called Bianwen in the Tang dynasty more than 1300 years ago and Huaben in the Song dynasty. Zhou Zhenhua says most stories'Suzhou Pingtan'performers tell are traditional ones。 There are some 120 traditional stories left to us by the ancient performers and'Pingtan'artists are continuously writing new ones that are closer to contemporary life. As an art with simple properties,'Pingtan'requires its performers to be all-round developed so as to transfer the content of the stories. [Detail]
The creation of clay figurines is a venerable art that combines sculpting and painting. The artist mixes and mashes clay,cotton and fiber and either sculpts or moulds this raw material into human figures or animal likenesses. Figurines fall generally under the three main categories of hanging and desk ornaments and toys. Farmer residents of villages in Fengxiang are all adept at modeling clay figurines,a skill they still employ during slack farming seasons. There are two main clay figurine production bases in China today:the Wuxi Huishan Clay Figurines in Jiangsu Province and Zhang Clay Figurines in Tianjin. [Detail]
Embroidery is a form of traditional Chinese art. Shen Shou over the past 100 years has had the greatest impact on the development of Suzhou-style embroidery. Also that year,the Qing Government sent Shen to Japan to observe Japan's works of art–especially the embroideries and paintings. By combining her experiences,Japan's embroidery techniques and Europe and America's sketching and oil painting techniques,Shen set a new standard for Chinese embroidery. Of the outstanding needlework artistes,Jin Jingfen formally acknowledged Shen as her master. Wu closely followed Shen's style.
