Kunqu Opera: An orchid in bloom

When British people were marking the 400th anniversary of the death of their iconic wordsmith William Shakespeare in 2016, their Chinese counterparts were paying tribute to an equally brilliant dramatist, Tang Xianzu, who passed away in the same year in 1616.

Few outside China might have heard of Tang, but in his home country, the playwright is a legend with his work being brought to life through Kunqu Opera.

However, unlike Shakespeare whose plays have stood the test of time and been staged for centuries after his death, Tang and his Kunqu masterpieces have went through ups and downs, twists and turns, and almost risked dying out.
