Representatives from travel agencies and media organizations from Russia, the US, the UK and Japan joined the Grand Canal Tour in Yangzhou, organized by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Yangzhou government, on April 13.

The themed travel aims to get 1,000 expats in the province to have a close understanding of the Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also the longest as well as the oldest canal or artificial river in the world.

Alexander Pleshakov, general manager of a traditional Chinese medicine center in Russia has been in China for 25 years but this was his first visit to Yangzhou. Pleshakov became intoxicated with the beauty of the city and kept taking photos.

Sergey Dzhan-Sha, vice-chairman of a Russian travel association and general manager of a travel agency, saw characteristics unique to Yangzhou which can be incorporated into customized tour routes. He has considered combining tourism products with health, leisure, and even painting to attract international tourists, and he also hoped Russian artists can create in this romantic tourism city.

An array of new travel routes themed around the Grand Canal will be selected for global promotion, according to Ye Lingbo, an official of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. “We invite foreign friends to experience the life in cities along the Grand Canal and hope they can share their travel to people across the world so that more people will know is waterway and come to visit it.”
