File photo shows the huge couplets hung on the old city wall for the celebration of the Spring Festival in 2018.

A global campaign to call for Spring Festival couplets to flank 40 gates of old city walls in Jiangsu Province was launched on November 7.

Organized by Xinhua Daily Media Group, the province’s news portal jschina.com and Nanjing Morning News, this campaign will select couplets, a pair of poetry celebrating the Chinese New Year based on certain writing rules and usually pasted to both sides of doors.

This is the third time for Nanjing to organize this event, which proved to be popular in the past editions.

Nanjing is making effort to apply for the UNESCO World Heritage list for the city wall, built in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Meanwhile, as the Nanjing City Wall Museum starts construction, more and more people are aware of the importance of the historical and cultural remains.

2019 will be the Year of the Pig according to Chinese zodiac. Of the 40 city gates, 12 are in Nanjing.
