Jiming Temple, located at the foot of Jilong Hill and south of Xuanwu Lake, is considered one of the most eminent among the 480 Buddhist temples built in Nanjing during the Southern Dynasties (420-589).

For centuries the temple has been the most favored by Nanjing people. It has become a part of local life to appreciate the gorgeous cherry blossoms on the road leading to the temple in spring and enjoy the sutras of Buddhism any time of the year.

The underground library in the temple’s yard can be a nice place to enjoy a moment of peace. Small but elegant and cozy, it offers seats that are cushioned while the unique design of the seating and shelves never makes visitors feel crowded.

On the long table are Buddhism calligraphy copybooks that people can learn. At the end of the library is a meditation room free of charge. Visitors can take a break here when they feel tired from reading.

The library is open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm every day except Wednesday. Visitors can use their personal ID to get a reading card but the books can’t be taken away.
