Ronghua, or velvet flower, is one of intangible cultural heritages in Nanjing, but it has found its way in Italia.

The well-known Italian perfume maker Acqua di Parma launched a limited edition of perfume on June 15, and the packaging boxes of these pieces decorated with velvet flowers.

Each bottle of the perfume is mounted on the a blooming pink velvet flower in the box. In addition, the velvet flowers can be used as corsages later on.

Due to high cost and low output value among other factors, the popularity of velvet flowers withers, and the technique for making the art pieces is inherited by only one folk craftsman, Zhao Shuxian, to date. However, thanks to his constant hard work, velvet flowers have been being used in various activities in Nanjing.

There are nearly 10 steps in the velvet flower-making process, including dyeing and softening of brass wires, Zhao introduced. “It has taken me two days just to make one velvet flower for Acqua di Parma’s perfume boxes,” he added.
