Huaian’s management innovation safeguards food safety

As a pillar sector in Huaian, food industry’s production value reached over 100 billion yuan ($15 billion) for the first time in 2016. To solve the bottleneck of food safety, the city has explored the Internet-based new management model that stands out for being transparent and governance-sharing.

Huaian has created four platforms for four respective fields - catering, vegetables market, food production and food circulation, making the every step of food production, operation, law enforcement and public appraisals all on the Internet.

By the end of 2017, Huaian’s catering platform has been linked to 4,365 service providers, including all school canteens, 200 large providers, eight meal distribution centers, 55 elderly-care institutes and 76 canteens of enterprises and institutions. The vegetables-centered platform has covered 70 indoor farmers markets and 4,800 privately-owned stores, with daily monitoring of 3,000 batches of vegetables at about 5,000 tons. The passing rate of vegetables before hitting the market rose from 92.1 percent to 99.6 percent.
