A Yangtze River Delta Research Institute was unveiled in Taicang, Jiangsu province on Feb 6, Taicang Daily reported.

The establishment of the institute marks the substantial progress made in cooperation between Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province and Taicang municipal government.

Civil aviation, intelligent manufacturing, new materials, electronic information, satellite applications and transportation will be the six main research fields of the institute.

A batch of research teams from the Xi'an university will settle in the research center to help construct it into a high-level institute integrating production, education and research to advance the city's economic and social development.

Ten renowned scholars, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and "Yangtze River" Distinguished Professors who have received China's highest academic award, will lead a team of 500 researchers to promote the industrialization of cutting-edge research results and the settlement of good projects in the city.

Zhang Wei, Party secretary of NPU, said at the opening ceremony that Taicang's vitality, advanced urban design concepts, sound industrial foundations and advantageous location increase the university's confidence in its success.

On Jan 15 of this year, Taicang municipal government and NPU signed a cooperation agreement to establish a Yangtze River Delta Research Institute and a new campus in Taicang.

NPU, a national key university, specializes in education and research in the fields of materials, aerospace, navigation, engineering and physics, and is ranked 10th among China's engineering universities.
