Over 10,000 residents in cities and counties along the Grand Canal in Jiangsu Province participated in the second Happy New Year hiking event on January 1.

The Grand Canal, spanning over 2,000 kilometers between Beijing and Hangzhou, was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2014.

The Jiangsu section of the world's longest manmade waterway jointly organized the event to celebrate the New Year and also promote the new progress made in developing the cultural belt along the canal.

The hiking event’s main venue, at the Wulongqiao Park in Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, attracted over 2,500 residents. They were joined by others in Yangzhou City, Wuxi City, Changzhou City, Zhenjiang City, Huai’an City, Suqian County and Peixian County.

Xinhua Daily Media Group organized the first Grand Canal walking event last year. The second edition, also initiated by the media group, was jointly hosted by the province’s Department of Culture and Tourism, Department of Water Resources and Department of Sports.
