MTR Corporation announced recently that preparation for the West Kowloon Terminus of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link is almost complete and the cross-boundary railway service is set to open in September.

In the first stage, the rail service will link the Special Administrative Region (SAR) to the national high-speed rail network, allowing passengers to travel directly between Hong Kong and 16 major mainland cities, such as Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Changsha and Shantou.

As there’s no direct train link between Hong Kong and Nanjing, passengers can choose to transfer at Hangzhou and Guangzhou South railway stations. The journey takes only seven to eight hours, and the fare is expected to be around 1,000 yuan ($146).

Under the arrangement, a port will be established in West Kowloon Terminus, where the mainland and the HKSAR will jointly carry out exit and entry supervision, so passengers from Hong Kong no need to accept border checks again when they reach the mainland destinations.
