Six elephants from Zimbabwe have completed a quarantine period and are expected to meet the public soon at Yancheng Safari Park in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province.

It is the first time that Jiangsu’s customs port processed the rare, treasured elephants from Africa.

Data shows the population of African elephants has declined rapidly to about 500,000 today. The six elephants now in Jiangsu, two male and four female, are from 3 to 4 years old.

Li Dongming, director of the animal and plants section at the Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, said Yancheng Safari Park imported one African elephant specimen in 2014 when it caused a wild sensation. After four years, the park finally imported live elephants to enable visitors have closer interaction.
