Jiangsu’s top leaders participated in a meeting in Changzhou City to promote the faster development of high-speed railway network in the province on Oct. 8.

Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress, also announced the start of building the intercity railway along the southern bank of the Yangtze River. Wu Zhenglong, deputy secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and governor of Jiangsu, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

The new railway has a design speed of 350 km/h and the main line will be 278.53 km long. With a construction period of four years, it starts from Nanjing South Railway Station in the west and ends in Taicang Railway Station in the east, which then links with the railway to Shanghai.

The railway passes through one of the most populated areas in the province and the Yangtze River Delta, which also have the highest level of urban-rural integration and the best economic and social development.

Wu Zhenglong said that more efforts are needed to promote the province’s high-speed railways development. He also emphasized that the intercity railway is an important project for the “Belt and Road” initiative and the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. It will also serve as the backbone of the intercity rail transit network in the delta’s core area.
