As Xinhua Daily continues a special report about Jiangsu people in the nation’s “Belt and Road” initiative through the form of a message in a bottle, this story will focus on the economic and trade cooperation with countries along the initiative.

The overland Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, more commonly known as the “Belt and Road” initiative, meet in China’s coastal province of Jiangsu, which is the eastern start point of the New Eurasian Land Bridge (NELB), an international passageway linking the Pacific and the Atlantic and one of the economic corridors proposed under the initiative.

As an economic powerhouse, Jiangsu’s advantages lie in its location, industry, opening up and innovation. In the past five years, Jiangsu enterprises have made great strides in “going global” and deepened the capacity cooperation with countries and regions along the “Belt and Road,” achieving fruitful results in the economic and trade development, mutual benefit and win-win.

Work performance report in SSEZ

Lin Yada, a worker at the Chinese-operated Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ), the biggest SEZ in Cambodia, put a work report and a Chinese knot, a decorative handicraft, into the signature bottle used in the special report on Sept. 5.

Lin works as a team leader in a plant of Hodo Group, a Jiangsu-based company principally engaged in the production and distribution of men's apparels. She said, “this work report was written by my Chinese manager and it helps me to keep making progress.” Lin’s family in the past depended on her father who fished in the sea and the family’s economic conditions were not good. Now, working in the plant at SSEZ, Lin can earn $500 dollars a month, and her two sisters also have jobs in the plant. Like many other families, her family conditions are getting much better. Data shows SSEZ has created 21,000 jobs.

Fifteen minutes after the interview with Lin Yada, Xinhua Daily’s message bottle received a Chinese knot from Jiang Jun, executive deputy manager of SSEZ’s engineering design department. Jiang said 125 enterprises from China, Europe and the United States and other countries and regions have achieved win-win development at the special economic zone, and the zone’s industrial output value contributed over half of Sihanoukville’s economic growth.” Jiang said he will bring the message bottle back to Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province when he returns next time.

Jiangsu has shared its development experience, replicated the mode of the development zone, and built various industrial parks overseas among its deep integration into the “Belt and Road” initiative. Ma Minglong, Director of the Jiangsu Department of Commerce, said that the SSEZ and Ethiopia's Eastern Industrial Zone, both invested by Jiangsu, have been recognized as national-level overseas economic and trade cooperation zones. Meanwhile, the Agricultural Industrial Zone in Indonesia, developed by Jiangsu enterprise Rugao Shuangma Chemical Co., Ltd., and the Jiangsu-Shinyanga Agricultural Industrial Zone in Tanzania, developed by Jiangsu Overseas Group Co. Ltd., have been recognized as provincial-level overseas industrial clusters.
