After gaining the Level A1 license from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) East China Regional Bureau, the Jianhu General Aviation Airport is now official open, making Jianhu the first county-level city in northern Jiangsu Province to boast a general aviation airport.

The airport occupies 600 mu (40 hectares) of land, with a runway measuring 800 meters long and 30 meters wide. After put into operation, it can serve as the testing and transfer base for small general aircraft manufacturers. The airport will also be widely used in general aviation flights, such as emergency rescue, urban environmental protection, agriculture and forestry operations, meteorological exploration, scientific experiments, short-distance transportation, low-altitude tourism, business flight and flight training. The airport’s equipment is fully ready for operation at present.

According to the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) and Mid-to-Long Term General Aviation Airport Planning for Jiangsu Province, Jiangsu will build 16 general aviation airports at the first stage and 35 by 2030. Seven airports will be located in Yancheng’ subordinate areas, including Sheyang, Xiangshui, Dafeng, Binhai, Jianhu, Funing and Dongtai.

Under China’s GA airport classification management measures, released in April 2017, type A airports are categorized into three subtypes: A1, which are GA airports with commercial flights with an aircraft suitable for 10+ passengers; A2, GA airports with commercial flights with an aircraft suitable for five to nine passengers; and A3, all other airports not included in categories A1 and A2.
