More than 50 women were busy grafting mulberry saplings at a greenhouse in the Haisen sericulture cooperative in Teyong Town, Sheyang County, Jiangsu Province on May 14.

“Employees in the cooperative are all local female farmers and they come to work when they aren't tending their fields,” said Shi Desu, chairman of the cooperative. “The cooperative provides a free lunch. Sun Xiaofang in Group Four earns most as she grafts over 5,000 mulberry saplings a day, or up to 6,000 at her best, with a net income of over 300 yuan. Dong Xiufang, although in her seventies, can work on more than 2,000 saplings.”

“The mulberry saplings after grafting can be sold locally and also in 16 provinces and cities including Sichuan and Shaanxi, while some are exported to countries such as Uzbekistan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Vietnam and Azerbaijan,” said Cao Pingsu, Party chief in Teyong. The cooperative now boasts a mulberry growing area of 2,100 mu (140 hectares), enabling the town to cultivate 100 million mulberry saplings a year and with an annual value of 50 million yuan.
