Jiangsu Province made a strong start in foreign trade in the first month of the year with a surge over the same period last year in all three major indicators.

Total imports and exports increased by 13.2 percent year-on-year to 347.39 billion yuan ($54.78 billion), accounting for 13.8 percent of the China’s foreign trade in January. The province’s export volume was 202.14 billion yuan, a rise of 3.8 percent, and imports reached 145.25 billion yuan in value, up 29.6 percent.

Experts believe a key reason behind the growth is development of trade with Europe, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In the four markets, Jiangsu recorded trade volume of 57.51 billion yuan, 39.12 billion yuan, 24.91 billion yuan and 18.68 billion yuan respectively, all up over 20 percent year-on-year.
