Jiangsu plans to add another 50 community hospitals in a pilot program to enhance resident’s easier access to healthcare resources and further improve the services of hospitals at the community-level, according to the Jiangsu Provincial Health and Health Commission.

Tasked with the screening, prevention and treatment of common diseases and chronic diseases, community hospitals, although small, are regarded as the most accessible health gatekeepers to residents. Based on the recommendation and application from various places in Jiangsu, the province selected 67 such hospitals in the pilot program with prioritized support in January 2018.

Jiangsu has introduced a slew of measures to develop the community-level hospital, such as encouraging physicians from higher-level hospitals to serve at the community hospital, improving the inpatient wards, supporting the distinctive service in some specific fields and training more professionals.

This initiative has effectively motivated local governments to improve the medical and healthcare system at the community-level and expand the hospital’s service capabilities. Most of community hospitals in the pilot program have opened rehabilitation medicine department and services, with about 30 rehabilitation nursing beds now available. Those hospitals can offer diagnosis and treatment in more than 100 types of services.
