The autonomous minibus invested by Nanjing Jiangbei New District Technology Investment Group conducted the first municipal road test in the Industrial Technology Research and Development Park on October 9.

This minibus, 4 meters long and 2 meters wide, can carry up to 12 passengers. There is no steering wheel on the bus as the route is set by the control. The electric minibus has a top speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

The two minibuses from France had a test run at the Jiulonghu Campus of Southeast University in February this year. The biggest challenge for the minibus is the traffic lights in the road test.

Dr. Zhuang Weichao from the university’s College of Mechanical Engineering, said that transportation devices are installed on the bus and the traffic lights for wireless communication. The traffic lights will send real-time information to the vehicle for it to decide whether to go forward or stop.

The minibus, equipped with lidar, can perform many functions, such as slower speed, obstacle avoidance, emergency shut-down, and automatic stop by station.

At present, the vehicle is mostly used in short-distance shuttle services in factories, campuses, residential areas, subway and bus stations.

The autonomous minibus is expected to be put into test operation in the Industrial Technology Research and Development Park at the end of the year after the road test. It will also be promoted across the Jiangbei New District in the future. Editor:Dylan
