Jiangsu dominates China's top 10 most competitive counties

A total of six counties from Jiangsu Province have made into the first 10 places in the list of the 2018 Top 100 Counties (Cities) with Comprehensive Strengths in China, with Kunshan, Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang and Changshu occupying the first four places, and Taicang and Yixing ranking the seventh and ninth, respectively.

Meanwhile, Wujin District of Changzhou City and Wujiang and Wuzhong districts of Suzhou City ranked third, seventh and ninth respectively in the list of the 2018 Top 100 Districts with Comprehensive Strengths.

The two rankings are part of 11 lists in a research report on the scientific development index of China’s small and medium-sized cities, released on Oct 8.

The report carried out a systematic research and evaluation on small and medium-sized cities from multiple dimensions, including the comprehensive strengths, green development, investment potential, scientific and technological innovation and new urbanization quality.

The report said small and medium-sized cities are an important driving force for China’s economic development. By the end of 2017, there were 2,811 small and medium-sized cities (including districts with townships and towns under their jurisdiction in the broader sense) in China, with the total administrative areas at ??9.34 million square kilometers, or 97.3 percent of China’s land area. These areas have a total population of 1.177 billion, or 84.67 percent of the country's total, and an economy of 70.24 trillion yuan, or 84.92 percent of China’s total.
