The Heart and Diabetes Center North Rhine-Westphalia (HDZ NRW), the largest heart and diabetes clinic in Europe, said it is expected to introduce Germany's most advanced artificial heart project to Jiangsu this year.

The HDZ NRW made the announcement at the 3rd Sino-German Medical Exchange held at Wuxi Mingci Cardiovascular Hospital on Sept. 4.

The project, high on agenda for the cooperation between Jiangsu and North Rhine-Westphalia this year, will be piloted at the Wuxi Mingci Cardiovascular Hospital.

The artificial heart is a new type of treatment for heart diseases. Made of special materials, it can restore a patient's physical functions after implanted into the patient’s body through surgical surgery. This new type of artificial heart can sustain for more than 5 years and can meet the needs of more than 80 percent of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Approximately 2,000 artificial heart transplants are performed worldwide each year, half of which are in Germany. The country is also one of the regions in the world with a high level of cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment.

With a total investment of more than 800 million yuan ($117 million), Wuxi Mingci Cardiovascular Hospital is the first Grade 3, A-class hospital specialized in cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Jiangsu Province.
