Jiangsu province plans to add another nine underwater road across the Yangtze River, bringing the total number to 45, according to media report on July 10.

Data from the provincial transportation department showed 650,000 vehicles a day on average passed the roads across the river in 2017, a triple increase than a decade ago. It’s estimated that the number of river-crossing vehicles will rise to one million by 2020.

After a full consideration of the traffic demands as well as the functions of railway, road, and urban rail system, the provincial transportation department has proposed building nine additional underwater tunnels.

The nine tunnels will have four in Nanjing, three between Zhenjiang and Yangzhou cities, and one in Taizhou and one in Nantong.

Between the Nanjing Second Bridge and Nanjing Third Bridge, there will be one underwater tunnel within less than 2 kilometers along the Yangtze River.
