New home for fireflies in Meijie Mountain

Inauguration ceremony of the China Firefly Protection Alliance.

The inauguration ceremony of the China Firefly Protection Alliance took place on June 8 and 9 in Meijie Mountain, Liyang City, where a firefly protection base was also officially launched. Researchers also released progress of the world’s first firefly genome.

Initiated by Fu Xinhua, an associate professor of Huazhong Agricultural University, and Zhong Chunming, founder of Meijie Shanye Hot Spring Resort, the alliance was established also with the support of Hubei Shouwang Firefly Research Center, Meijie Shanye Hot Spring Resort and Alashan Society of Entrepreneurs & Ecology (SEE) Foundation.

The alliance will not only protect the wild fireflies in the Meijie Mountain in a more professional manner, but also plan schools to guide scientific observation and appreciation of fireflies, as well as develop fireflies-related nature courses, so as to provide comprehensive science knowledge and observation services about fireflies.

In the future, the alliance will continue working with governments, research institutes, enterprises, conservation areas, NGOs, educational institutions, media and more various social forces to make joint efforts in ecological protection.
