Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province ranked the 17th among the world’s top 20 smart cities, the first in China, in an Intel-sponsored study, which looked at the cities worldwide across four key areas: mobility, health care, public safety and productivity.

The study by Juniper Research mainly examined urban transport systems. A ‘smart city’ is the use of Internet of Things technology to collect and analyze data and improve the infrastructure and public services.

Wuxi will make efforts this year to connect governmental data, integrate the separate resources, and improve the efficiency of public services. The city’s Health and Family Planning Commission plans to introduce smart medical applications to make online registration and payment a reality. The Internet speed for commercial uses, especially those closely related to people’s livelihood, will be dramatically increased. In addition, Wuxi is also trying hard to become a pilot city to carry out 5G, the ultra-fast 5th Generation mobile networks.

It’s believed that, on the first-mover advantages in IoT, Wuxi will develop more advanced solutions to building a smart city, an initiative that can also promote the IoT technology and rapid industrial growth.
