Jiangsu’s river chief system legally confirmed

The Regulations on River Management in Jiangsu province was recently assessed and approved by the 32nd Session of the 12th Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress, and the regulations will come into force from Jan 1, 2018, which means that the river chief system has been legally confirmed in Jiangsu, according to Jiangsu media on Oct 11.

As a province with numerous rivers and well-developed water systems, Jiangsu boasts more than 20,000 rivers, including 727 big rivers. The river chief system is an important innovation of the water management system and ecological environment system.

To date, the province has basically established its river chief network and organizational system. Its 13 large cities, 119 counties (county-level cities and districts) and 1,334 towns (communities) have all worked out their work schemes for river chief system implementation. A total of over 60,000 river chiefs at provincial, city, county, town and village levels have been selected, covering 158,600 rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the province.
