Elaine Lan Chao (Zhao Xiaolan in Chinese) is the 18th and current United States Secretary of Transportation and is the first Chinese American in US history to be appointed to a President’s Cabinet.

Her mother, Ruth Mulan Chu, was from Xuyi of Huai’an.

Chao once wrote in an article titled Ordinary Yet Extraordinary – Ruth Mulan Chu Chao’s Story that "Named Xiaolan, which means 'little (Mu) Lan', in honor of my mother, I am an extension of her, forever linked to her through shared ancestry, blood, and spirit.”

Chao feels deeply about her mother’s hometown. She and her father visited Xuyi in 2009 to discover her roots. Chao’s family is grateful for the support and care provided by Huai’an.
