Quarantine officers from the Zhangjiagang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Jiangsu province intercepted a black mamba among a shipment of logs from Zambia, Jiangsu media reported on May 2. The snake, among the world’s top 10 most venomous, is known as the "death of Africa".

The African logs, including precious rosewood, are the main sources of the country’s high quality wood, imported mainly from Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Congo, Liberia, Central Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola and Ghana. Various types of anomalies are often detected during inspection, resulting from the hollows of some logs, as well as poor management and processing conditions in production areas.

Reportedly, the intercepted snake was 1.8 meters long and weighed about 1.5 kilograms. It was caught by a quarantine officer with a snake trap and sent to a laboratory for further study and disposal.
