Having completed her service as a volunteer at a national conference on building up a more civilized society at the port city of Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province on April 6 and 7, Yang Haiyan was delighted beyond words.
"I felt so proud when hearing the delegates' praise for Zhangjiagang and its highly civilized society," said Yang, who was among the 90 volunteers contributing to the smooth running of the conference.
Beyond the efforts made by local government in building up a model city, the large crowd of volunteers adds a unique aspect to the city's civilization progress.
"Voluntary work makes me feel fulfilled and needed," said Yang, who is an experienced volunteer. Once a housewife, she said that joining a local volunteer organization has changed her life from everyday routine to always being up and doing something.

Wang Kaiyao, also a helping hand at the national conference, was eager to share his feelings. "Though very exhausted, I think it was worthwhile and it encouraged me to keep on doing my bit for society," he said.
A group of shutterbugs for their part volunteered to record the great moments of the conference. "I took more than 1,000 pictures over a couple of days," said Shi Xiaojiao, director of the photography team, "Our members will always follow the heart, trying our utmost to capture the beauty of life."
As a city full of love and sharing, Zhangjiagang set up its first volunteer association in 2013. Though young, the association has gathered 62 groups of more than 3,000 local residents, all sharing a spirit of dedication, friendship, assistance and progress.
