Several hospitals in Nanjing including Nanjing General Hospital, Jiangsu Provincial Hospital and Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University recently signed contracts with a helicopter rescue company for offering helicopter ambulance service, according to Jiangsu media on April 10.

Equipped with such medical rescue equipment as respirator, defibrillator, infusion pump and stretcher, a helicopter ambulance, also hailed as an air taxi, is capable of carrying two pilots, three medical personnel and one patient each time.

On March 22, a patient was sent to Nanjing General Hospital by a helicopter from Xuzhou city, which is over 300 kilometers away from Nanjing, in only 1.5 hours. It was the first case in which a patient was transported by helicopter ambulance. In the past, aerial medical rescue was mainly conducted by civil aviation chartered planes.
