June 26th marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It's meant to highlight the dangers of illegal drug use around the world. China has launched a series of campaigns to crack down on drug problems. Chinese President Xi Jinping has reiterated the country should sustain its effort to battle drug abuse, while putting the focus on education and preventative methods, especially with young adults and teenagers. CGTN's Zhao Yunfei has more.

Thirty-four new types of New Psychoactive Substances, or NPS were found in the past year, adding to a list of 230 types in total.

The chemicals in NPS's mimic the effects of illegal drugs while exploiting loopholes in anti-drug laws.

LIU YUEJIN VICE DIRECTOR, CHINA NATIONAL NARCOTICS CONTROL COMMISSION "NPS's are now a relatively new issue recognized by the international anti-narcotics community. The Chinese government will always respond in an active and responsible manner to solve the issue with other countries."

In 2017, China cracked 140 thousand drug-related criminal cases and arrested 169 thousand drug-related suspects.

By the end of 2017, there were 2.55 million drug users nationwide -- 15-thousand of them under 18 years old. That's only 0.6 percent of all users, but experts say the number is still too high.

A drug prevention education digital platform for youth has launched ahead of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Students can find information on illicit drugs, including tutorial videos and quizzes.

LIANG YUN, VICE DIRECTOR CHINA NATIONAL NARCOTICS CONTROL COMMISSION "From a global perspective, we use advanced technology to ensure our children have access to quality resources on drug prevention education."

Cross-border drug trafficking remains a growing problem. The internet has become a platform for traffickers to collude and make transactions. China, however, continues to cooperate with neighboring countries, such as Myanmar and Laos to strengthen drug control cooperation. Zhao Yunfei, CGTN, Beijing.
