Eight killed in road collapse in S China

At least eight people were killed after a road collapsed in Foshan City in south China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday night, Xinhua reported.

According to local authority, a sudden water leakage in the city's subway Line 2 construction site caused the road collapse.

The incident happened at around8:40 p.m. local time. So far, nine people have been rescued and three remain unaccounted for.

Local media reported that it is an eight-lane bidirectional road. The collapsed area is about the size of two basketball courts and the pit is six to seven meters deep.

The rescue operation and an investigation into the cause of the accident are underway.
