E. China student reportedly beaten by peers over public display of affection

A university student in Binzhou, east China’s Shandong Province, was beaten up by members of his college’s “Self-discipline Committee” after they objected to him hugging his girlfriend on campus, according to the Beijing News.

The anonymous student was reportedly left with multiple bruises after the incident at Binzhou University on Sunday.

Such committees are common in Chinese universities, where public displays of affection are often prohibited.

Nevertheless, the attack has sparked much discussion on Chinese social media after photos purportedly showing the students’ bruises were circulated online. Many netizens said hugs and kisses in public should be considered acceptable.
